Normally, industrial air compressors have air flow rates printed on the machine parameter table. This parameter is carefully checked by manufacturers with specialized measuring tools. However, for old air compressors that have been used for many years or used machines imported from Japan (Japanese used machines), the air flow has decreased significantly.
You can check the actual flow rate of your air compressor with the simple steps below.
Note: do this when production stops completely and should do it 2-3 times to get the average for the most accurate data.
Step 1: Stop the air compressor
Step 2: Lock all valves from the air tank down to production.
Step 3: Drain all air and water (open the bottom drain valve) to bring the pressure in the air tank back to atmospheric pressure. Then close the valve.
Step 4: Prepare a stopwatch, then turn on the air compressor. Note the time the machine runs until it stops or switches to idle mode. If the screw air compressor is a frequency converter, it can be selected to a specific pressure level about 1-2 bar lower than the set pressure and note the time at which that pressure is reached.
Step 5: Note the volume of the air tank, if the air pipeline is large and goes a significant distance from the compressor to the tank, this volume needs to be calculated.
Step 6: Note the idle pressure or the specified pressure levels
Step 7: Apply the formula below to calculate the actual flow of the air compressor
